An advertised price can become the starting point for judging a deal, even when it is a poor guide to value. Anchoring is the influence of a starting value on a later estimate or judgement.
An anchor can be relevant information, an arbitrary number or a deliberate proposal. Its influence varies; it does not force every person to accept a particular price. Ask what evidence supports the starting number and what independent comparison is available.
