An ordinary wood screw develops grip where its thread engages suitable timber. It is not a generic fixing for every material behind a painted wall. A plug, anchor or purpose-designed screw changes how load reaches that material.

Start with the actual support, the object and the proposed fixing’s instructions. A product designed for one substrate or board thickness may not work in another, even if it fits the hole.
