Paint must make contact with a surface to form a useful coating. Wetting describes how a liquid spreads over it. Surface energy and the liquid’s own properties help determine that behaviour.

Grease, wax or silicone contamination can interfere with wetting. But a smooth or glossy appearance does not by itself mean a coating will fail. The exact paint, surface and preparation determine compatibility.
