A spare key locked inside the house
A spare key is only useful if it isn’t locked inside the house. Your phone has quietly become the house. It holds your authenticator, receives your text codes, keeps your passkeys and stays signed in to your email. Lose it, and the usual ways into your accounts go with it.
Every account has a way back for that moment, its recovery route: backup codes, a recovery email or phone number, a trusted contact, a recovery key. Each one only works if you can reach it without the thing you’ve lost. Losing a phone doesn’t have to mean losing your accounts, but it will if every spare key is inside it.
