A loaded bicycle is easier to move uphill in a low gear because the rider can turn the pedals more times for each wheel turn. A car’s transmission makes a similar trade between rotational speed and torque.

A combustion engine works within a useful speed range. Gear ratios help match that range to moving away, climbing and cruising. They can multiply torque while reducing output speed; they do not multiply power, and real transmissions lose some energy.
