Moving engine parts would suffer rapid friction and wear without lubrication. Oil supplies a film between working surfaces and carries additives that help protect them under demanding conditions.

The film is not an absolute promise that metal surfaces never touch. Starts, loads, temperature and design change the lubrication conditions. Adequate oil of the correct specification and a working supply system are both needed.
